Is there any health reason at all for an adult human to drink cows' milk?

April 26, 2011
NOTMILK.COM:

It's hard for me to come up with even one good reason other

than simple preference. But if you try hard, in my opinion,

these would be the best two: milk is a source of calcium and

it's a source of amino acids (proteins).

Let's look at the calcium first. Why are we concerned at all

about calcium? Obviously, we intend it to build strong bones

and protect us against osteoporosis. And no doubt about it,

milk is loaded with calcium. But is it a good calcium source

for humans? I think not. Th...

The Protein Myth

April 26, 2011
NOTMILK.COM:

Remember when you were a kid and the adults all told you to

"make sure you get plenty of good protein". Protein was the

nutritional "good guys”" when I was young. And of course

milk is fitted right in.

As regards protein, milk is indeed a rich source of protein-

-"liquid meat," remember? However that isn't necessarily

what we need. In actual fact it is a source of difficulty.

Nearly all Americans eat too much protein.

First to be noted is that the recommended protein has been

ste...

Apple FAQ: An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

April 26, 2011

Great Information about the History of the Apple and its Health Benefits:

One of the most popular quotations of the 19th Century was "An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Before the 20th century there was no food pyramid or someone to announce the importance of five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. People simply recognized the healthy attributes of the apple. Some people were also well aware of the apple's relationship to the history of the world. Author-naturalist Henry David Tho...

Where does the saying An apple a day keeps the doctor away come from?

April 26, 2011
After researching on the web, Answers.com informed me:

Answer:
From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman (1996): "An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Eating fruit regularly keeps one healthy. First found as a Welsh folk proverb (1866)" 'Eat an apple on going to bed,/ And you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread.' First attested in the United States in 1913..

Today my mom and I made our weekly visit to the fresh market and Whole Foods.  We bought celery, tomatoes, pears, spinach, green beans, mixed greens, dried papaya, organic oatmeal, and dry roasted cashews.  It will definitely be another delicious week.  We also found these beautiful sunflowers for Easter.

Earth Day 2011

April 22, 2011
Today I spent a wonderful Earth Day with my mom bicycling.  We had a serene nature-filled day full of love and fun.  We stopped for lunch at our favorite picnic table.  We didn't see much wildlife today on the trail .. a baby turtle was about it compared to the usual armadillos and the occasional bobcat.  We had a great time together just pedaling through the beautiful earth and enjoying all of her naturalistic simplicity.  Later, I looked through books of beautiful places around the world a...

10 Best and Worst Foods for You

April 20, 2011
Recently, scientists proudly announced their creation of an index to rank how particular foods encourage or discourage inflammation -- a well-known contributor to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and dementia. This is great in theory, but scientists being scientists, it’s all obscure algorithms and formulas -- hardly a useful list to take to the grocery store. So I asked contributing medical editor and nutrition expert Andrew L. Rubman, ND, to give us his ea...
